We had the opportunity to interview Shelby, the lead vocalist of breathless, your new favorite heavygaze band hailing from Orlando. We caught up with her shortly after they dropped their debut single "rot" and performed it live for the first time while opening for Fluxe at Conduit. In our conversation, we delved into the creative process behind their single and the journey that led to the formation of the group we know today as breathless.

Cadence Collective: Hey! I’m Isabelle with Cadence Collective and I’m with Shelby from breathless.
So tell us, why breathless?
Shelby: Well, i don’t know if i should spill my secrets, but we actually had a band name before breathless, but then we sat down and were like okay, we actually hate that band name, and we sat for like a couple hours to like figure out a cooler band name and for the OGs, you’ll know what the band name originally was, but i’m not gonna say.
One of our songs was called breathless , like we don’t play it now but, we were sorta like oh , breathless, we will go with that.
Cadence Collective: So, you’re not gonna tell us the first name?
Shelby: Nope! Its a mystery.

Cadence Collective: What does your creative process look like? Specifically for your guys new single “rot”
Shelby: Our creative process? Thats a funny question cause we kinda just throw things together and whatever sticks just sticks, and I kinda just let my soul spill out and whatever words come out that I like, I record them and then I sing them.
And then for rot, thats the same thing!

Cadence Collective: So what are some artist that you pull inspiration from?
Shelby: Oh! You know I really like Glare, I also really like Pierce the Veil, not that I like pull inspiration from them but I LOVE them.
But the band really loves niche hardcore, like Roman Candle. Mitch loves metal, hardcore, punk, goth and same with Evan and our drummer ( Justin ). I’m like a big indie girl, like I love indie bands like Backseat Lovers.

Cadence Collective: So when did you start coming into the music scene?
Shelby: About a year ago, I met Mitch , our guitarist on a website .. Well Facebook Marketplace and then they were like you should listen to all these bands, and they would like play the music they played and I was just like okay i’ll just sing that and that’s how I got here!

Cadence Collective: What does 2024 look like for breathless?
Shelby: 2024. Looks like a lot of recording (f yea) and a lot of shows.
